Lot Essay

The distinctive enamel evident on the terminals of the present cross - decorated with black dots on a white ground - and the gold 'rope twist' borders find parallels in a number of enamel-mounted hardstone pieces produced in Paris in the second quarter of the 17th century, (see Alcouffe, op. cit., nos. 197 and 207).
